| Business Energy Tips - Hot Water
Choose the right size
Choose a hot water system which suits your usage. Larger systems will cost you money to heat a greater amount of water, even if you don’t use it.
Finding the right location
If you are fitting out your business, consider the positioning of your hot water system/s. Take into consideration where the most usage is going to occur and install your systems as close to the outlets as possible. This will reduce the time (and water usage) it takes for hot water to come from the taps as well as reducing the amount of water your system has to heat.
Water saving devices
Installing electronic sensors on taps and low-flow nozzles on showers and taps will reduce the amount of water unnecessarily wasted. This will also reduce the demand on your hot water service.
Keep it warm
Insulating your hot water pipes is an inexpensive way to reduce heat loss and increase the efficiency of your hot water service.
Instant hot water
Should your business only need the occasional use of hot water, consider using an instantaneous hot water service which will only consume energy when in use.
Use the sun
Should your business consume 80 litres or more of hot water per day, it is worth considering a solar hot water service. This will use the sun’s energy instead of electricity or gas to heat your hot water, greatly reducing your energy requirements.
Keeping the right temperature
Your hot water service may be set at a factory setting, well above the temperature you actually require. Consider reducing the set temperature by up to 10 degrees, which could save more than 5% of the energy usage cost.
Holiday Periods
Does your business close down over Christmas? When your business is closed for extended periods of time, ensure your hot water service is turned off. This will save a lot of energy consumed and result in greater savings for you.
Leaky Taps
A leaking tap can waste up to 1400 litres of water per month. In addition to your water bills, if they are your hot water taps leaking it will also cost you money to heat the wasted hot water.
Regular Servicing
Ensure your hot water service is looked at by a professional on a regular basis. This will ensure a faulty pressure or release valve is not responsible for continual water leaks and increased energy consumption. |
