Fluorescent lighting
This is cheaper to run than standard incandescent globes. Switching fluorescent lights on does not draw excess power.

Energy efficient lights
Compared with incandescent globes, energy efficient lights are usually four times more economical to run and can last up to eight times longer. You get the same light from a 25 watt energy efficient light as from a 100 watt incandescent bulb.

Extra value
Clean lampshades and lights often for full brightness. Use lampshades with white interiors to reflect maximum light. Fit dimmers to switches to reduce power when soft lighting is all you need.

Automatic lights and timers
Exterior security lights can be fitted with movement detectors and timers, so they're only on when needed. Infra-red movement detectors fitted to interior lights make sure lights aren't left on. Light-sensitive (photoelectric) switches can be fitted to make sure exterior lights are not left on during the day.
