Glossary - M
Market contract: Refers to the contract a customer enters into with their electricity retailer when they leave the Government-regulated franchise tariff. See also Full Retail Competition.
Megawatt: A unit of power equal to one million watts.
Megawatt hour (MWh): One million watts used for one hour. Energy consumption for large consumers is measured in MWh.
Meters: A meter measures the amount of electricity you use. There are essentially two types of meters:
- A "basic" meter is a meter that requires manual reading of your consumption data by a Meter Data Provider who forwards the read onto us. This type of meter is usually read once a quarter.
- A "smart" or "interval" meter is a meter that automatically reads your consumption data at frequent intervals, and then electronically transmits your data to the Meter Data Provider who forwards the data onto us. This type of meter is usually for large consumers of electricity.
For basic meters your Distributor is responsible for arranging the Meter Data Provider to read customers' consumption data and for forwarding it to the relevant electricity retailer. For smart meters this responsibility will be taken by your retailer.
Metering point: This is the point of physical connection for the device measuring the current in the power conductor.
Meter Read Fee: This is a fee charged by your Distributor to read your meter. This will only appear on your bill if you are a business customer and your meter is read monthly. |
