Protect your home from power surges this summer

Powerdirect is urging customers to protect sensitive electrical equipment during the summer storm season by guarding against power surges.

Powerdirect Chief Operating Officer Kate Skilleter said lightning strikes on electricity infrastructure could cause sudden voltage increases – surges – to customers’ regular electricity supply.

“Surges can damage TVs, stereos, computers and other electrical equipment, leaving you with a hefty repair bill and the inconvenience of making insurance claims,” she said.

“One simple option is to unplug appliances at the power point before a storm arrives. However surge protectors are another simple and cost-effective way to minimise potential damage to your property,” she said.

Ms Skilleter said surge protectors were generally available from hardware stores, electrical and computer retailers.

“Customers should be aware that the intensity of surges varies as do the levels of protection offered by surge protectors,” she said.

“You may choose a plug-in device to help protect only specific electrical appliances or an electrician can connect a device to your property’s main switchboard thereby helping to protect your whole home.

“Your electrical or computer retailer can advise you on the best option for your needs,” she said.

Ms Skilleter advised customers that it was difficult to protect against the effects of a direct lightning strike, regardless of the protector you use.

She said customers should also remember that fluctuations to electricity supply could occur at any time of the year.

“While summer storms increase the risk of surges caused by lightning, fluctuations to your regular electricity supply can occur year-round due to a range of events,” she said.

“These include accidents affecting power supply and the turning on or off of powerful electrical equipment such as electric motors and welders.

“Spending a few dollars on surge protection can help save a lot of money on repairing or replacing damaged equipment,” she said.
