National Electricity Market

What is the difference between a retailer and distributor?

Distributors are companies that own the electricity poles and wires. If you have a power outage you need to contact your distributor.

Electricity retailers, such as Powerdirect, buy electricity from the generators and sell it to you. We are responsible for meter reading and billing services and we can provide you with quotes for your electricity needs.

What is Full Retail Competition?

Full Retail Competition (FRC) refers to the full deregulation of a state’s electricity market, allowing all customers to choose their retailer. This has already occurred in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and the ACT.

As FRC has only recently been introduced into Queensland, residents can visit the Queensland Department of Energy website for more information.
